What is The Spider-Man Effect?

I recently had an interesting conversation with a friend on how marketing is shifting from the traditional advertisement models using radio and TV, to the more efficient and effective way of increasing “word of mouth” using the  modern online tools to establish an effective social network for marketing. Basically internet marketing should aim to construct a presence using as many outlets as possible to increase the chance of people finding your content via their social media outlet of their choice.  This is called “social media engagement” and it’s quickly becoming the most important tool for marketing and the distribution of content.

It works something like this. Let’s say a business or a film wants to reach their audiences more effectively. The first step would be to have a main landing page using a website such as wordpress.com or their own website. The main objective is always going to be to increase conversion rates by subscribing to the page or buying a product offered online. This is going to be the center of our spider-man web. The way to expand our web’s reach will be by surrounding the main page with the other media social outlets like Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, linkedIn and so on and so forth. Individually any of these will hit a plateau where growth will slow down or come to a halt. However, together they become a powerful sticky web that your target audience will reach your content no matter what social media outlet they choose.

A second phase would be to retain your followers by constantly engaging them with content in all social media outlets. This can be done by tailoring specific content to each social media platform or integrating them in a way that by posting content in one outlet the rest will automatically re-post the same content via applications; that allow them to access the content information, e.g. Facebook connecting with Twitter and Linkedin.

The third and final phase would be to convert followers to clients by leading them to take action and buy your product. If you have been successful engaging the audience they will be more committed emotionally and would easily take this last step. Of course only a percent of followers will translate into conversions at the end. That is why the broader your social media web is, the more followers you will attract and the higher the percent of conversions.  This is the new marketing model and both filmmakers and entrepreneurs should be very aware and jump on the bandwagon as soon as possible.

New Adventures

2012 is here with exciting developments.  After many months of researching and writing; the short film “Prism” is finally moving past the writing stages to the pre-production stages. Today I  had a marketing meeting with Brian Brisky and Chris Green.  a plan was established for Prism covering my personal goals, behind the scenes marketing opportunities, target audiences, marketing penetration and film distribution. These are exciting times for me and all the work I have done using networking is finally paying off. If you wish to look behind the scenes of the development of this film be sure to subscribe here and like my Facebook page. I will be posting step by step everything until the film is available to watch for your viewing pleasure and giving you a total film school experience.

Another exciting project I’m about to launch is my commercial website www.makeamovienow.net. I’ll be interviewing the big players in the Austin film community so filmmakers can learn how to work full-time on filmmaking projects instead of working part-time while they wait for the mythical “Big Break”.  All in all, I cannot be happier and more excited.

How Networking can help an Artist

It doesn’t matter what artistic field you fit into. It doesn’t matter the budget you have for marketing. The most efficient way to find resources and clients are through networking. It surprises me how many people don’t take networking seriously. Not only does it open new doors, it’s a great way to meet interesting people; in a word it’s value is priceless.

As many of you know. I’m a filmmaker, as such I’m used to reaching out to people. It was not always like this. After film school I had to move back to Puerto Rico for economical reasons. In retrospective I should have taking the risk of becoming homeless. It proved to be one of the worst decisions I ever made for the sole reason of wasting time. Fast forward; six years later I moved to my current location in Texas and I have leaped in progress ever since. The tool I used was Meetup.com and I found many groups of aspiring filmmakers. The most convenient one for me was The Austin Film Meet. A group hosted by H.Cherdon, it has introduced me to wonderful people. I found my current Editor for my latest film through the group and made many more contacts for future projects I have in mind.

Austin Fim Meet attendees gathered for a weekly Topic

The same can be applied for any other field. I’m a strong advocate of meeting people personally and not just making contacts in internet social networks. I tried to build an internet social network of filmmakers in Puerto Rico through Myspace back on it’s better days before Facebook became the Goliath it is today. Needless to say, it never took off. Meeting people personally gives the best results and builds trust more quickly, something online networks are slower to do; if it happens at all.

A network of people besides working opportunities and clients may also provide for low to no cost at all of services you would otherwise pay twice or more in normal circumstances. I needed pictures of me for my website and personal resumes. My pictures cost me a fraction of what professional photographers charge. My editor is working pro-bono. I can go on a on of the benefits of networking. Ultimately you must take action and try it yourself. Find an interest group in your community and sign up for it. Remember to take business cards with you and use them wisely
